On October 19th, our team held a writing workshop to improve and build upon the Riley Robot universe we created. We brainstormed many ideas for new books in the Riley Robot series. There were three categories for book ideas. Math, science, and social lessons. This way we could cover all of the necessary life skills. Doing so allowed us a range ideas from learning shapes to asking for help. Next, we picked out seven book outlines and split up into groups. After we made basic outlines for our books, we invited some Girl Scout Brownies to read our first Riley Robot book. Once they gave us their feedback, we used their ideas to revise and improve the outlines of our new stories. The Girl Scouts were very enthusiastic and came up with some really great (and sometimes silly) ideas.
Our team also drove last season’s robot to show what these kids could do if they want to join the team when they are older. We also took them on a tour of the robotics lab, and got to show them the UAA Rover.
We managed to finish writing the final text for most of the books, and are really excited to be adding 7 stories to our series! At our next meeting, we will draw illustrations for the new books. Riley robot can be found on our new Riley Robot Website, along with future stories. We hope you can read our books!
