3D Modeling
3D modeling is one of the most important tools in engineering, and our robotics team is no exception. 3D modeling is the construction of the robot in a 3D environment, including both custom-built components (things you cut out of plastic or metal), and pre-made components (motors, electronics, gears, etc.). By having this virtual model, you can quickly diagnose issues in designs, and correct them before committing to assembly. It can also be used in computer-controlled fabrication methods like water-jetting, laser-cutting, or 3D printing, where a design created on the computer will be made using automated processes. 3D modeling also has the possibility of being used for driver practice, and simulations to determine the structural integrity of our designs.
3D modeling has a steep learning curve, however, it is a fantastic tool to use. If you have experience with programs like Sketchup or TinkerCAD, these are great stepping stones for using the software we use: Fusion 360. Furthermore, if you have experience with Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, Creo, or Onshape, it is easy to make the transition to Fusion 360. If not, no worries! There are plenty of resources available
If you’re interested in getting started 3D modeling, the software is free for students and both Mac and Windows compatible. You can create an account and download it here: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/students-teachers-educators
Once you have an account, send your email to #CAD on discord, and we will add you to the shared drive. This will give you access to past seasons designs, and a library of components.
To learn Fusion 360, there are many resources online. The most applicable to FRC is located below, which guides you through many basic and intermediate modeling techniques. https://academy.autodesk.com/course/133777/fusion-360-first-robotics-competitions
Autodesk (the creators of Fusion 360), also has a suite of other software that can be useful in FRC. To see the completed list, visit https://www.autodesk.com/education/competitions-and-events/first/all-products.
